Mission Accomplished!

OK, so I have not negotiated world peace, nor have I solved the problem of world hunger. But I did reach my weight loss goal on October 1st after nine months of calorie counting and exercise. I trimmed down from 211 to 175 pounds, a thirty six pound reduction.

There are both plusses and minuses from this effort.

On the positive side, I feel lighter on my feet (duh!), my digestion has improved, I no longer have to use the CPAP machine at night, and I have changed back to my old wardrobe.

On the negative side, I have to mend my relationship with my wife who was frustrated with my changed eating habits. She’s a great cook, and prides herself on her ability to feed her family, so I get it. Also, I have many recently-purchased items of clothing that now resemble hand-me-downs from a much larger brother. However, now the folks who shop at the GoodWill store will have a few nice warm shirts and tops to choose from as we head into cooler weather.

And some of the widow ladies at church have commented on my improved appearance, causing my wife a bit of concern. Her best friend, a spritely eighty-seven year old, has taken to calling me “skinny”.

God is good, always providing what we need. I’ve learned a lot about food this year which has affected my dietary choices; information I’ll use from now on. I plan to work on getting more fit; a little stronger maybe. Although sadly, so far, there has been zero improvement in my golf game. Nevertheless, I can still walk nine holes, so the exercise, fresh air, and fellowship all make for a healthy life.

Wishing you all a beautiful autumn and a bountiful harvest.

  1. Robert, you’re both a challenge and a rebuke to me! Congratulations on your phenomenal weight loss. I’ve been trying to follow your example (except I don’t play golf), and I thought I was doing well until I read your post! I lost 14 lbs but have a long way to go to match your achievement. Maybe one day I’ll reach that illusive goal.

    • No rebuke intended. Rather, I hope to encourage others to set a goal and to keep at it. Every pound we lose is one less pound for the heart to support. Fourteen pounds is a good chunk (pun intended). For me, losing the first couple of pounds was easy, but that last pound was a battle. Now comes the hard part, staying at my goal weight.

  2. Yeah! Congrats, and now the challenge will be to reform your eating habits, especially with a good cook in the house. Moderation is, of course, THE KEY.🤠
As for Goodwill, see if there is a better outlet like a church clothing drive. Goodwill takes in donations and makes a killing reselling. We have a couple of churches that serve the poor of our city.

  3. Small portions is the key. Once I had back surgery and was in the outer limits for a month due to pain meds, I lost 30 pounds. Of course, my diet consisted of tomato soup and pudding. I gained a few back but am at 179 now. Heart doc says 168-170 is my ideal range if I want to stay upright and breathing.

  4. Very well done indeed Robert, wow! Nice read too. Your wife deservers a medal too, so hard to not spoil you with her skills! I’d be so tempted, and don’t enjoy cooking for myself. What an achievement. I don’t think there is a soul in the world who is satisfied with their bodies, so amazing. The recipients of the nice clothes will be blessed indeed! The joy you’ll receive – even more! I have to keep reminding myself that my body is not my own. God bless you.
