New Year-Update

Back in January I wrote about my decision to lose weight, and compared the disciplines required with those spiritual habits that lead to a healthier life. Here’s my report.

As of this morning, I have lost 30 pounds, or about 14% of my body weight. It feels wonderful. I kept to the goal of 1,500 calories a day, logging every meal and snack since January. I upped the exercise routine a bit, getting at least 30 minutes a day; and often substantially more when I walk the golf course or do heavy yard work. My goal is to lose six more pounds by the end of summer. Obviously, despite my wife’s fear, I have not perished.

The spiritual diet is going well. I continue daily prayer and Bible reading, attend worship every Sunday, participate in our Men’s Bible study (presently on summer hiatus), and I have read several books on faith matters; presently reading “The Triumph of the Lamb” by Dennis E. Johnson, a study of the book of Revelation. I have become more at peace with myself and with life circumstances as my faith in the sovereignty of God grows.

A healthy life requires discipline, physically, mentally, and spirituallly. The goals I set for myself in January have become a reality now at midyear. The goals I have set for the future will ensure my continued pursuit of Shalom, until He calls me home. SDG

  1. Congratulations! It’s such a great feeling when you’ve achieved something you set out to do. Great discipline! I’ve just completed ‘The Ultimate guide to the Daniel Fast’ by Kristen Feola. Her daily devotionals are encouraging too. The blessings of choosing God over everything else really helps us in our daily lives. A nice selection of foods without meat etc. (choice foods) is great too and one can continue using them to keep on track with weight. Well done Rob!

  3. Your post has thrown down a challenge, just like the challenge my doctor just gave me: lose 10 lbs. before my next visit in two months. Can I do it? Fifteen hundred calories? Whew! That’s got to be quite the test! What is your exercise routine–beside heavy yard work and golfing? Y’all pray for me now!

    • You can do it! I do 15 minutes of stretching including a plank. The other 15 minutes I use a rowing machine or Schwinn Airdyne. Some days I walk for 30 minutes. I eat more fruit. I drink Slimfast at lunch. I track everything. I also don’t sweat those occasions when I deviate from the routine, such as when we celebrated our anniversary. You can do it!

  4. I tried Slimfast once several years ago. The problem was that I mistakenly thought it was just to be my beverage with a normal lunch! No weight loss from that! I like the idea of more fruit, not so much the planks! I have no exercise equipment, having worn out my treadmill, but I’ll try to increase my walking. Thanks for the tips–and the words of encouragement.
