Sprinter

After two years of deliberation, and much indecision, I finally sucked it up and bought a new lawn mower. She’s a real beauty with a Swedish name, Husqvarna, and a Japanese branded twin cylinder engine, Kawasaki, and a proud “Made in America” sticker. It’ll cut a 42” swath, 25% wider than my old mower, which may reduce my mowing time to under an hour. Here’s a picture taken in my yard two days ago when she was delivered.

Here’s another picture, taken this morning. They say it’ll accumulate to six inches or more.

This is, of course, a phenomenon known as “Sprinter”, that season that can’t decide what it wants to be, as my online friend, Mitch Teemly, has so poetically described it.

So, even though my crocus and buttercups have been in full bloom for a week,

and despite the fact that my new mower sits in the shed, ready to go, I’m afraid the machine I’ll use today is the snowblower. One more time.

Here’s to Wisconsin, the state of never-ending surprises, where the best advice you’ll ever get is, “Never put away your snow boots”.

  1. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about buying a snowblower down here in the sunny South, but I have already begun mowing my yard (er, make that mostly weeds in the back, the front is bermuda, which won’t be ready to mow for several weeks yet). Several years ago, I traded in my Cub Cadet rider, which was beginning to nickel and dime me to death, for a John Deere. Hope you enjoy your multinational Husqvarna.

    • A Cub Cadet was on my short list. There’s no Deere dealer in town, and I did not want to buy from a big box outfit. So I went to my local dealer to buy another Simplicity, only to discover they stopped making them last year. The Husqvarna rates middling well in Consumer Reports, so I hope this performs OK for a few years.

      • When I was in the market for a new mower, the mechanic who did the work on my Cub Cadet advised me not to buy from the big box stores but rather to buy directly from the dealer. There is a difference in the quality of the mowers produced for the big boxes and those sold by the dealers. You made a wise choice.
