Which apostle, Peter or John, will I be like today? Will I be the brave, impetuous man of action, leaping before I look? Or will I be the thoughtful, observant, and faithful man whom Jesus loved?

Today the daily devotional reading from Alistair Begg’s book “Truth For Life” recounts the final scene of John’s Gospel, where the disciples are in the boat after an unsuccessful night of fishing. A voice calls out from the shore suggesting they try casting the net over the other side of the boat. It’s an amazing catch, so big that the net begins to break. Then John perceives that it’s Jesus there on the shore. No sooner does he speak Jesus’ name, when Peter jumps overboard to swim/run to his Savior. Here’s how Alistair Begg sums up the differences between these two men:

“Without the contemplative, insightful nature of Johns, the Peters of this world would burn out in feverish activity. Without the boldness of Peters, the Johns of this world would waste away in introspection. We all need partners to serve Christ well. Whether you are a Peter or a John, or whatever your particular temperament, God made you as you are to serve a purpose in His Kingdom.”

There’s comfort in that truth. We can only be what God made us to be. And we are obligated to be whatever that is with all our heart, soul, and strength for the glory of God.
