Back in January I wrote about my decision to lose weight, and compared the disciplines required with those spiritual habits that lead to a healthier life. Here’s my report.
As of this morning, I have lost 30 pounds, or about 14% of my body weight. It feels wonderful. I kept to the goal of 1,500 calories a day, logging every meal and snack since January. I upped the exercise routine a bit, getting at least 30 minutes a day; and often substantially more when I walk the golf course or do heavy yard work. My goal is to lose six more pounds by the end of summer. Obviously, despite my wife’s fear, I have not perished.
The spiritual diet is going well. I continue daily prayer and Bible reading, attend worship every Sunday, participate in our Men’s Bible study (presently on summer hiatus), and I have read several books on faith matters; presently reading “The Triumph of the Lamb” by Dennis E. Johnson, a study of the book of Revelation. I have become more at peace with myself and with life circumstances as my faith in the sovereignty of God grows.
A healthy life requires discipline, physically, mentally, and spirituallly. The goals I set for myself in January have become a reality now at midyear. The goals I have set for the future will ensure my continued pursuit of Shalom, until He calls me home. SDG
