A Sign of Hope

After all the hoopla, after all the polls and pundits had their say, last Monday evening marked the beginning of the people’s turn to express their preference for a candidate to run in the presidential election next November. For many, the results from Iowa portend a sad repeat of the last election. Two old men, both flawed to the point that neither one should hold that critical office, will once again be on the ballot. Which poison will we choose?

So it was with some discouragement I set out to a job Tuesday morning. As I pulled out of the garage, my whole perspective changed in an instant when I saw this sign in the sky:

It looked like a rainbow against a clear, cold, blue sky. I was stunned by its brilliance. As I drove down the road, I called my wife and told her to rush to the window to see this sight. When I arrived at the job site, I quickly told my partner and our customer to look outside; come see what a wonderful artist God is.

Now, the photo above is not mine. In all my excitement, I forgot to take a picture, so I searched the Internet to find one that looked like what I saw on Tuesday. This photo captures exactly what I observed in the sky. Of course it’s not a rainbow, it’s a “Sun Dog” created by sunlight reflecting off ice crystals in the air.

Why did my perspective change? Because God never changes. It is not enough that He created everything; He created so much beauty just for His and our pleasure. He does stuff like this to remind us that He is here, that He cares for saint and sinner alike, and all that He does makes me remember how unnecessary are my worries.

So I will watch all the primary election results with interest, and, depending on who the candidates are, I may or may not choose to vote in November. No matter what, I know that my God reigns, and that my Savior is seated in heaven, ruling all things behind the scenes, and that the Holy Spirit is alive in His people, and that this glorious triune God will deliver on all His promises to His people. On Tuesday, He put a magnificent sign in the sky telling me to keep on trusting in Him. TBTG

  1. God already knows who will win the election, and reminds me not to put my hope in the government or a president, and that he is at work every hour behind the scenes while we focus on the news. Thanking him for a powerful reminder for you to keep looking up!

  2. The timing of my reading your post was interesting. Just before reading it, I had participated in a poll by the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), the conservative competitor to AARP. The question was “What keeps you awake at night?” and it listed numerous problems/issues our country is currently facing: the election, immigration, crime, education, drugs, etc. I was just about ready to select one option when I read the last one: something to the effect that in spite of all those other issues I could sleep soundly at night. The implication of that option, I’m afraid, seemed to indicate that anyone who selected it didn’t care about any of the other issues. Far from it, however, for me. It’s not that I don’t care about any of those things but rather that I know Who is in charge and working all things out to the benefit of believers and for His Own glory! For too long, our election choices have been the lesser of the evils, but God is still in charge, and that fact should determine our perspective! A great post.

  3. I had never heard of a Sun Dog, so of course I had to google it. Apparently, they are relatively rare. How amazing that you got to see one! Blessings, Robert! P.S. I trust God, too. But I will definitely vote for the party that is against abortion.
